This page is for the Taming Your Email with Thunderbird 3.1 and Getting Started with Thunderbird 3.1 guides I wrote for the Ubuntu Vancouver LoCo. The Ubuntu Vancouver Local Community, or LoCo, is an Ubuntu users group in Vancouver, Canada. It's a community of people sharing a passion for the free computer operating system, Ubuntu. Eh hem... you may notice that this really doesn't look like a site that has anything to do with Thunderbird. That's because this page's real home will be on a writing and photo collection that currently exists only in my mind's eye. My grand vision includes a Jim's Papers site containing writing, notes and photos sections. You should be able to see the new site appearing over the next week or so.

I apologize that some of the links just go to blank pages; the the site is still a work in progress. Check back next week and things should look different, or at least be a little 'more there'. If nothing else, I might have some pretty new buttons or thingamabobs you can click. If you want to explore what I have so far, you can always get back here from the Writing link on the Home page.

This guide follows Mary, an Ubuntu user, through the decision to use Mozilla Thunderbird and the steps she takes to install Thunderbird 3.1 onto Ubuntu 10.10. One of the of reasons Mary decides to use Thunderbird is how easy it is to import existing messages and contacts from the email accounts she currently uses. We'll see just how easy it is as Mary imports the email and contacts from her other other accounts into Thunderbird.

This next guide continues to follow Mary as she learns how to use Thunderbird to manage the large volume of email she receives. With dozens of email messages arriving in each of her email accounts every day, Mary has been suffering from 'email overload'. Fortunately, Thunderbird has come to her rescue. We'll watch as Mary learns to efficiently view and search email, group and prioritize messages, filter and automate message handling, and finally maintain and backup Thunderbird so that it continues to run smoothly.
